Townscape Heritage Initiative
As part of the Brixton Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Brixton Project and Lambeth Council. Over the past 5 years the project has funded the extensive repair and restoration of the central architecture of Brixton, focused particularly on the restoration of Reliance Arcade and the extensive refurbishment of the buildings on Electric Avenue. The ambition for the project was to protect Brixton’s historic buildings and preserve them for future generations to enjoy.
The Heritage Champions – Architects Panel engaged with building and business owners/occupiers in the Conservation Area to enhance their understanding of the value of heritage buildings by creating a positive sense of place and a thriving town centre, providing practical advice and guidance on appropriate maintenance, visual presentation and planning regulations for heritage buildings. The panel have clarified constraints, considerations and signpost helpful resources and contacts making them accessible and understandable to occupiers.
Following this panel Brixton BID have developed free Design Surgeries for local businesses to attend, where they can seek advice from architects and access tips for renovations that are sympathetic to Brixton’s historical heritage.
