What is a Bid?

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a not-for-profit collective of local businesses who have come together to help improve their immediate area. Over 300 BIDs are currently in operation in the UK. In the Brixton BID’s case, over 500 businesses pay an annual levy that covers initiatives set out by the local business community.

The amount that businesses pay is based on the rateable value and it is proportional to the size of the premises. Generally businesses pay 1.5% of their rateable value, if they are rated £12,000 or more.

All BIDs operate on a five-year term – at the end of which, there is a ballot in which businesses decide if they would like the BID to continue. You can find the results for our last renewal ballot in 2018 here.

Governance

Brixton Business Improvement District (BID) operates through Brixton BID Development Company a not-for-profit organisation established in January 2014 by local businesses.

The BID is overseen by a Board of local business leaders (volunteered time) and a small Executive Team who delivers the BID business plan.

Since 2014 Brixton BID has invested over £1.75m exclusively in Brixton, with 10% of that money coming from external sources. The BID is 100% committed to improving Brixton for all.

The Board of Directors meet throughout the year to make strategic decisions, the agenda and minutes of the meetings are available upon request. The Roles and Responsibilities of Directors and the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the company are available here.

The BID holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) in February and welcomes all BID members to attend. The agenda and minutes of the AGM are available upon request.
