We’re excited to announce we won the ‘City Nation Place Award for Best Placemaking Initiative’ for our inaugural Brixton X Harlem Festival in 2022. Brixton BID Managing Director Gianluca Rizzo and Cultural Manager Jessica Dyer were presented with the award by on 9 November 2023.
The City Nation Place Awards celebrate and benchmark the very best in strategic thinking for places – the only specialist global awards designed to showcase the best approaches to building and managing the reputation of destinations, towns, cities, regions, and nations of all sizes.
The Judges’ said:
The jury were impressed by how the Brixton BID team have taken the idea of town twinning to another level – a level which adds real value to the businesses and citizens of Brixton.
Twinning with Harlem is one of those ideas that is so obvious in retrospect, which is what makes it so clever – and the creative leveraging of a twinning relationship built on shared values and cultural heritage through place-shaping events that engaged citizens has been really effective.
Gianluca Rizzo, Managing Director, Brixton BID said:
We are incredibly proud to have won this award. For us, this is testament to the genuine friendship we have forged with Harlem based on our shared stories, lived experiences, struggles and opportunities. Brixton and Harlem are united in showcasing the power of change that BIDs can bring about as well as inspire.
The Brixton X Harlem twinning continued this year with our second festival this August. Across five days music, performances and events took place across Brixton. The BID team are excited to continue to grow the twinning and celebrate our two neighbourhoods in new ways. We encourage any of our members who are interested in twinning with a Harlem-based business or who have ideas about bringing the twinning to life to get in touch with Jessica via email@example.com
