Action Tutoring is a national education charity supporting pupils facing socio-economic disadvantage to achieve a meaningful level of academic attainment, with a view of enabling them to go on to further education, employment or training. Currently, two thirds of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds miss out on achieving five A*-C grades at GCSE. At primary school only 35% of pupils from low-income backgrounds meet expected grades in reading, writing and maths in their national exams (Source: DfE 2016). In light of this, Action Tutoring partner with primary and secondary schools to deliver tutoring programmes in English and maths to pupils who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this type of support.
Action Tutoring are looking for volunteers to commit to tutoring for just one hour a week, for roughly 8-10 weeks, at one of their many partner schools in the Brixton area. As a volunteer, you will be able to choose which programme you would like to support on. All sessions take place in the school and you will be working directly with two pupils, in a wider group of other volunteers and pupils. Training, a DBS check and specially designed workbooks will also be provided.
Date: From September 2017, applications open all year round.
Time commitment: 1 hour a week, for 8-10 weeks
Location: A choice of over 30 schools across London, including Christ Church Primary School, Loughborough Primary School, St John’s Angell Town Primary School, Saint Gabriel’s College
